Swim

Update: On the 14th June 2015 Carol successfully completed a two-mile swim (10,560 feet) at the Great North Swim. Two challenges down, one to go.

My second 10,000 feet challenge is the Great North Swim – Europe’s biggest open water swimming event. Over three days around 10,000 participants swim in Windermere over a range of different distances. Windermere is England’s largest lake, at 10.5 miles long, and is located within the Lake District National Park.

I will be swimming the 2-mile course, a distance of 10,560 feet. This is equivalent (in distance only) to 129 lengths of a 25 metre swimming pool. However Windermere is not like a nice warm swimming pool, even in June, therefore it is compulsory for all participants to wear a wetsuit.

Things that worry me: I don’t own a wetsuit; I’ve never swum further than a few metres in a wetsuit before; I have a circulation condition that means my hands and feet get very cold, very quickly; and there might be strange creatures swimming about underneath me! I have a lot of training to do for this challenge.
