Climb

Update: On the 25th June 2015 Carol successfully climbed to the summit of Pic de Neouvielle. That’s all three challenges completed: jump, swim, and climb.

My third 10,000 feet challenge is a mountain climb. Pic de Néouvielle is a mountain in the Néouvielle massif in the French Pyrenees. The region is often called the ‘lake district’ of the Néouvielle National Nature ReservePic de Néouvielle is 10,141 feet high (3,091 metres or 1.92 miles).

The climb will take place in June, when the mountain will still be covered in snow. Therefore, for safety reasons, I will be accompanied by a Guide de Haute Montagne.

As I live in the UK I thought I’d compare the height of Pic de Néouvielle to the highest mountains in Scotland, Wales and England:

mountain scales

Left to Right: Pic de Néouvielle: 10,141 feet (3,091 metres); Ben Nevis: 4,409 ft (1344 m); Snowdon: 3,560 ft (1085 m); Scafell Pike: 3,209 ft (978 m).

Things I’m worried about: Altitude Sickness commonly occurs above 8,000 feet (2,400 metres), and it can affect anyone at anytime; the weather will stop me getting to the summit; being scared while climbing granite ridges covered in snow at a great height; and avalanches.
